The Elephant Sanctuary, Hartbeespoort Dam, is home to African elephants and offers an interactive African elephant experience. Our hands-on Elephant Interactions give guests the opportunity to get up close to these magnificent animals while learning about their behaviour, anatomy, communication and the challenges facing elephants in the wild. Our dedicated team uses positive reinforcement methods to encourage voluntary participation, allowing our elephants to remain relaxed and comfortable while interacting with our guests. The result is a unique and intimate experience that creates a genuine connection between people and elephants.
Elephant Interaction Program
Guests are guided on foot through The Elephant Sanctuary. Our knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights into African elephant behaviour, anatomy and communication. You will meet, face-to-face, these gentle giants and experience their warm breath and their unique trunks while feeding them. Take a walk with these majestic giants and appreciate them in their natural surroundings.
You will have the opportunity to interact with the elephants and learn about their unique anatomy, including their trunks, ears, skin and feet. You will also meet our dedicated Caretakers and learn about the trusting relationships they have developed with the elephants in their care. In the Anatomy Area, you will discover fascinating facts about elephant anatomy and the remarkable adaptations that make elephants such unique animals. Our aim is to give you a deeper understanding of elephants and inspire you to become an ambassador for their conservation and protection.
Remember to wear flat walking shoes, sun hats, and bring your camera.
The 08h00 session includes assisting the Caretakers with the morning brushing down of the elephants.

Booking Cancellation Policy
Cancellations are subject to the following charges, calculated on the total amount paid for the booking:
- More than 7 days before the scheduled activity: 100% refund.
- 7 to 2 days before the scheduled activity: 75% refund (25% cancellation fee).
- 48 to 24 hours before the scheduled activity: 50% refund.
- Less than 24 hours before the scheduled activity: No refund.
Once the program or activity has commenced, no refund will be provided if a guest chooses to stop, leave or not complete the program.
